Janet Jackson Becomes The First Black Woman To Win Billboard Icon Award
Janet Jackson is much more than her famous last name or her infamous wardrobe malfunction.
Sister of late pop icon, Micheal Jackson, and Hollywood heavyweight, Janet Jackson recorded a huge feat as she became the first Black woman to receive the Billboard Music Icon Award on Sunday.
The Billboard Music Icon Award is an annual honour given by Billboard, a publication and music popularity chart in the music industry since 1990.
Fifty-two year old Janet Jackson was honoured with the award as a result of the influence of her almost 40-year career which covers television and music, earning her 35 awards and over 100 million record sales.
The Hollywood veteran and the youngest sibling of the legendary Jackson family began her career with the variety television series “The Jacksons” in 1976 and went on to star in other television shows throughout the 1970s.
Popular news outlet, News Agency of Nigeria, reports that while accepting the award, the “Black Cat” hitmaker also used the award to appreciate powerful women speaking against discrimination. Before presenting Jackson with the award, R&B singer, Bruno Mars informed the audience that she “represents undeniable artistic genius”.
Janet later went on to perform her hit songs like “Nasty” from 1986’s, “Control”, “If” and ‘Throb” and “Janet” to the delight of the crowd.
Janet Jackson’s honour comes just days after the 25th anniversary of her seminal album “Janet”, along with an appearance on the cover of Billboard Magazine.
We’re so proud of seeing Janet become the first black woman to win the Billboard Music Icon Award. Go girl!!!
