Watch: “It’s Disrespectful to Mention Fela & I in the Same Sentence” – Wizkid

There’s really no gainsaying the fact that Wizkid is the uncrowned King of Contemporary Afrobeat.

The sensational serial hit-maker has managed to carve a niche on the Nigeria and African music scene not just as arguably the continent’s biggest musical export right now, but also on the global scale as an artiste to reckon with.

It is therefore not surprising that the internationally acclaimed multiple award winner has been compared on some level with the Afrobeat icon and pioneer himself, Fela Kuti.

Wizkid, in a recent interview, has however expressed that he doesn’t feel he should be compared in anyway to the legendary Fela, who the Starboy boss has repeatedly openly declared his idol.

According to Wizkid, Fela has remained the musical icon who he has looked up to the most as an artiste. He therefore considers it disrespectful to Fela to be mentioned in the same sentence as the phenomenal musician.

Among a myriad of other things, Wizkid took out time during the interview to spill the beans about his record deal with Sony, and the reason why he has no photo of him with Canadian rapper and two time collaborator, Drake.

Ardent fans of the singer would have noticed that although Wizkid has put out music recently, virtually all the songs have him on as a featured artiste.

The speculation has been than that Wizkid is unable to release songs as an artiste unless the songs are approved by Sony, who seem to be more interested in targeting global audiences with Wizkid’s songs.

About not having pictures with Drake on social media, Wizkid had this to say:

“Do you know how many people I hang out with on a daily basis that I don’t post the pictures? Do you know how many people that I know that I talk to and nobody even knows we’re friends. There’s a lot of them. I don’t really care about pictures or other stuff, I’m more of my work.

“What does a picture have to prove? That we hangout or we chill? We do that so why should I have to post it. I’m not that kind of person, I’m more of the music and I care about my music, so just enjoy the music. That’s all I’m here to deliver to my people, Accept it.

“I met Drake through Skepta, to be honest. He played my music to Drake, and he was like “yeah”. Skepta has been my brother even way before. Hearing that was pretty sick and amazing.

“I met him (Drake), it was in the club at a private party, and it was good vibes. He is cool with people too, great vibes. Big shout out to Drake and the whole OVO crew.”
